A great and main way to get young skin is simply through a healthy balanced diet- it is not rocket science that if you look after your body on the inside, it will definitely show on the outside. The page will talk about the top 10 anti-aging foods there are out there and proven to work. Foods that reduce aging do not only make your skin better but also have other numerous health benefits such as minimizing risk of cancers and other diseases. So sit back, relax, read this page and eat your way to beautiful skin.

1. Slather on the Olive Oil!

Olive oil is a superfood for aging skin, the extra virgin olive oil is even better (purer). It has so many benefits like keeping the skin’s elasticity and resilience to stop those wrinkles. Amazing! It has anti-viral and anti-oxidant properties that work wonders for the skin. The high volume of proteins, minerals and vitamins keep skin hydrated and extremely soft. Many anti-aging skin care products use  super-emollient olive oil to give the a skin a younger looking complexion but you can also use it in your food such as in salads, pasta and many other delicious dishes. Monounsaturated fats contained in olive oil and vitamins B and D help to smooth out the wrinkles that have already started forming too. You can also apply it topically as a face mask: apply to skin 4/5 times a day, if skin is extra dry- warm up the oil slightly and leave on the skin for 30 minutes and try to do this as often as possible. You will see the benefits! My mother swears by olive oil and claims it is a the reason for her youthful skin well into her 60s. One of the top anti-aging foods for sure!

2. Anti-oxidant Avocado!

Everyone is going mad about avocados recently and that is not without reason! It is packed with goodies to fight signs of aging. It contains chlorophyll which has anti-inflammatory properties, Vitamin E to prevent wrinkles and make the skin soft and smooth. Instead of eating it, you can make a face mask out of it combining it with coconut oil, apply this nightly and see the difference. Aside from skin, it is a monounsaturated healthy fat food source so it’s great to make you feel full and energized.

3.Gulp down Green Tea for Glowing skin!

Ever wonder why the Japanese have such glowing young skin? Many believe it’s due to their daily green tea drinking! Green tea is one of the best anti-aging foods or drinks, period. It is packed, I mean really packed with anti-oxidants to stop those free radicals (see our Science Skin care page for more information on anti-oxidants and how they work), it contains high volumes of oligomeric proanthocyanidins, one of the most powerful antioxidants out there.  These harmful free radicals deplete the oxygen in skin cells and break down and weaken the collagen in the skin causing it to sag- green tea is the answer to stop this from happening. No wonder most anti-aging skin care products contain this miracle ingredient.  It also works as a great morning energizer and is known to help with weight loss.  3 cups or more a day is highly beneficial and let it steep for 2 minutes so it is flavorful. You can also gently dab the teabag on the skin for a great moisturizing effect full of antioxidants.  Back to the Japanese, their life expectancy is one of the highest in the world- is one of the reasons down to the green stuff?

4. Fabulous Fish & Fish Oil!

Again the Japanese have nailed this one, consuming fish or fish oil which contains Omega 3 is so important for young skin. Eicosapentaenoic acid which is found in Omega 3 is a fibrous protein that keeps skin taut as is preserves collagen. Tuna, salmon and sardines are very high in the big O. It also contains docosahexaenoic acid which has anti-inflammatory properties. Try to have 2 servings of fatty fish each week. If you’re not keen on fish, we recommend taking Omega 3 capsules to take daily. It is one of the best anti-aging foods for skin.

5. Red Red Wine!

Great news right?Red wine is so powerful at warding off signs of aging. Many researches have proved this. It is full of anti-oxidants again working on free radicals. The main and most beneficial component in red wine is called  Resveratrol (found in grapes, so they are fantastic too!), which is the reason for the dark red color. It activates the enzyme called Sirtuin which is responsible for repairing DNA and cells. Aim to drink 2 small glasses daily (it’s low in calories too!)and try to drink no more than that, though it can be hard. But drinking too much can obviously have adverse effects. Bottoms up!

6. Beautiful Skin with Beans!

Beans are perfect for anti-aging diet. Anthocyanin is found in black beans and soybeans, it prevents free radicals from damaging skin cells preventing oxidation (one of the main reasons for aging skin). Isoflavones are found in soybeans too which have anti-aging qualities. Soybeans are one of the best anti-wrinkle foods because of the amino acids it contains (namely glycine, proline and lycine) which are known to have anti-wrinkle properties. Again back to the Japanese who did a research on these magic beans, they found that the females who consumed 40g of soy isoflavone aglycone over a 12 week period had a significant improvement of fine lines and skin elasticity compared to the placebo group.

7. Pick up a Papaya!

This tropical fruit is oozing with great nutrients such as beta carotene, vitamin C and an enzyme named Papain. Papaya is great for exfoliating and moisturizing skin. Beta carotene protects against the sun, evens out skin complexion and improves texture of the skin. It can also be applied topically in the form of anti-wrinkle creams. Any orangy-red fruit or vegetable contains beta carotene which the body then turns in to Retinol (vitamin A) which is a powerful anti-oxidant and essential for a good immune system. See our vitamin A page for more information on how good it is. Papaya is delicious and works as a great snack. But there are so many other foods contains this anti-aging ingredient such as sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy greens and broccoli. Be careful though how you cook these, try to steam you broccoli, do not boil the brains out of your carrots and leave your greens uncooked to get the most nutrients out of them as you may lose nutrients by overcooking.

8. Coconuts for Coconut oil!

Coconut oil is good for everything, hair, teeth, skin and health. It really is marvelous stuff which is inexpensive. You can buy it in a big pot which will last your for ages and you can apply it directing on to skin or use it for cooking (great for oriental cooking). This oil can protect your skin from external factors that contribute to aging skin. It contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties as it acts as an antiseptic which keeps the skin healthy, plus it contains other essential vitamins to help skin stay firm. Moreover, it contains an essential emollient which reduces wrinkling and makes the skin feel soft and more hydrated. In many major studies coconut oil has been proven to be highly effective for anti-aging.

9. Heavenly Honey!

Honey when combined with water acts an antiseptic for the skin protecting it from being damaging or inflamed. It also contains antioxidants and has antibacterial properties. Honey keeps the skin hydrated without making it oily which is a big advantage. You can make a face mask with honey to get rid of toxins and pollutants that are on the skin. See in our post about face mask recipes! No wonder for centuries beauty queens like Cleopatra have used raw honey as their skin care routine to keep looking healthy and youthful!

10. Go Nuts!

Nuts are rich in omegas and is a healthy fat -so good for the skin. Some nuts like almonds are high in vitamin E (See out vitamin E page for more details). All nuts are good for you and your skin so instead of chips opt for nuts and see the health benefits.

  1. Hi Paul and Rachel,

I love articles that you great advice of how to stay healthy and young. I totally agree that food is one of the puzzle parts and would say the most important one. However, you shouldn’t forget to make sports as this also keeps your body fit, young and healthy.

I’ll definitely try to more of the anti-aging foods you have mentioned and hope to stay as young as I am 😉

    1. Hi Don, great to hear you like articles like this one. We love it :). We have another page on our website dedicated to lifestyle and exercise in case you would like to read about it. It’s true that it is amazing what a bit of exercise can do for a person. It is also very stress reducing which has a positive influence on the aging process and mechanism.

  2. Wow what an extensive list you have gathered. This is great information for everyone looking to maintain their skin. I was a bit surprised by the mentioning of nuts and beans though. I never thought they were anti-aging foods. I must read more of your posts to find out what else I didn’t know 🙂 thanks!

  3. What an informative site! I love green tea and my wife always cook salmon which we consider and healthy and not to fatty. I must say I never noticed that about the Japanese people. They all seem to have really good skin. I better start on that green tea. I kind of thought that nuts are also fatty but now you’ve just enlightened me.

  4. I’ve known for years that green tea has medicinal benefits. What no one has been able to tell me is if there is a difference in the brand of green tea you buy. Do you have any suggestions? Should I buy it from the local grocery store? Should I buy it from an organic food store?

Secondly, another use for green tea is to stop itching from a bug bite. If you steep it for 2 minutes, squeeze most of the water out and then lay it on the bite it will stop the itching. It works. I’ve tried it.

Olive oil and coconut oil is good for your skin, for dryness and for your hair…cooking as well. In my home we use it for both.

    1. Hello Rawl, interesting that it also helps against bug bites. Amazing that green tea is so multifunctional. However, to say which brand works the best is difficult to say. This is because most researches have done research about green tea in general and the anti-oxidants in it. I do know that it is better to use organic green tea. It’s extra safe to use since there are no synthetic ingredients in it that can irritate the skin if used inappropriate. If there are no organic shops in your area I suggest amazon for cheap and good organic tea. The different effects between brands won’t be significant probably, but there is not enough research about it to be 100% sure. Until now the main organic green tea has proven to have positive effects on the skin and many other things that are important for your health (but you knew that already). However, there is research about how to use it. It is for example better to use it in the night, because to much air can destroy the moisturizing effect of green tea. Furthermore, if you would like to use green tea on a sunny day you could best do that in combination with sunscreen that contains zinc oxide for an optimal effect. Zinc oxide can keep the anti-oxidants active and protected from the sun which has a better effect on the skin for that reason. If you are interested in the side effects of the sun please click here . I hope this answer is helpful. Greetings, Paul

  5. Paul,

Thanks for this wonderful information. It’s great to see that there are so many things we can do to slow down the agin process on our skin. I am very curious about trying olive oil on my skin. I already have pretty oily skin as it is so it would be interesting to see how it affects me. Thanks

  7. Wow! It’s amazing what eating good food can do for your entire body. We hear so much about food with regards to our diet and our health that we often forget how beneficial it can be for our skin and making us feel beautiful. I was so happy to see fish and red wine on that list. I guess I’ve already got a head start 🙂
Very helpful post and well written!

    1. Hello Melody :), we are happy to hear you enjoyed the article. Haha yh I hope you won’t drink to much wine though, because that could create Rocasea which is not good for the skin lol. Thanks for the comment.

  8. Wow, I must thank you for this post…can you believe that I have an avocado tree in my yard but little did I know that it’s among the best anti-aging foods. We never seize to learn do we? Rachel and Paul, I thank you again for this and wish you all the best…
