Science of Anti-Aging Skin Care

Many scientists, physicians and other researchers spend so much time looking at different ways to delay the aging process.They strongly believe that you can slow down, stop or even reverse the aging process, therefore, put in time and a lot of effort to find out how to this. Physicians do this to improve the quality of life, both, physically and mentally. Anti-aging “medicine” is a balance between lifestyle and diet and also those vital ingredients we all need for younger skin skin such as antioxidants and certain vitamins.

Vitamins for Skin

First things first, vitamins for skin are essential for healthy skin! You will hear a lot about antioxidants when learning about anti-aging because they are some important to keep the body clean and healthy and these great nutrients come in the form of vitamins and other substances. Important new research from the Institute of Medicine in Washington D.C. have recently published a new general set of guidelines concerning the intake of antioxidant nutrients including vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids and selenium. Also, it was found that a variety of other nutrients are involved in the antioxidant process. The Institute of Medicine defines antioxidants as “a substance in foods that significantly decreases the adverse effects of reactive species, such as reactive oxygen species and nitrogen species, on the normal physiological function in human beings”.

Antioxidants Explained

The quote above may perhaps be confusing if you have not read a lot about anti-aging. Antioxidants are natural and man-made. Many are found in fruit and vegetables and have been known to prevent or slow down cell damage. The word “antioxidant” is more of a behaviour than a substance as any thing that can donate electrons and counteract free radicals has antioxidant qualities. The most common antioxidants are those we have mentioned before vitamin C & E, beta-carotene and also vitamin A and lycopene. They are found in many foods and there are also many supplements for antioxidants.

Oxidative stress occurs when harmful molecules called free radicals are stronger than the antioxidant defenses.  Free radicals containing oxygen are called reactive oxygen species (ROS). Free radicals are highly unstable as they have unpaired electrons, therefore, they start grabbing and donating electrons resulting in the damage of cells, DNA and proteins. It is impossible to avoid free radicals as they can arise inside or outside our bodies. Normal aerobic respiration, metabolism, and inflammation cause oxidants to develop inside the body. Exogenous free radicals (from outside the body) are due to pollution, UV rays, X-rays, alcohol consumption and smoking. Yes, our antioxidant systems are not always functioning beautifully and as we age the cells are continually damaged by oxidation accumulation. Therefore, it is crucial to take in the right amount of antioxidants to continue being and looking healthy.
