“Micro…derma…whaaat?” -What the heck is microdermabrasion?
We have put microdermabrasion under the Age Beautifully microscope and we found that doing microdermabrasion at home has never been easier but first what is it?
What if I told you, you have the glowing skin you’ve always wanted, there is just one layer stopping it from shining through?
Microdermabrasion is an innovative, non-invasive, non-chemical way to expose beautiful new skin under the dead skin. A spray of microcrystals is used to get rid of the first layer of skin revealing rejuvenated, tighter skin underneath.
The skin underneath consists of higher levels of elastin and collagen- the building blocks of young healthy skin. Also, it is much more gentle than dermabrasion. Now with the new inexpensive machines, you can do microdermabrasion at home.
Imagine, you can kiss your face lift, chemical peel and deadly injection salon treatments goodbye. If you consider how much you spend on these expensive dangerous treatments, it’s well worth thinking about microdermabrasion at home- you don’t even need to step outside the house. Think: people fork out $100 per salon treatment, with microdermabrasion you get it done at home, in 5 minutes, with salon quality.
Because the procedure is non-chemical, you could say it’s the perfect mix of science and nature because it uses your natural skin underneath to make you look younger without using any harsh treatments like chemical peels.
Day after day, year after year, your skin is attacked by a whole manner of things such as pollution, sun, daily dirt, stress, KIDS and sometimes poor diet and lifestyle (we’re all guilteee sometimes) choices. Because we are not perfect and love that lay in the sun with a cocktail in our hand, we need to take the necessary steps to look after our skin.
Microdermabrasion takes care of these problems. Let’s take a look at what it actually treats…
Microdermabrasion was created to treat a whole host of skin issues.
Here is the impressive list microdermabrasion has proved to fix:
- wrinkles and fine lines
- sun damage/ dark spots
- age spots
- dull skin
- large pores
- sagging skin
- uneven skin tone
- stretch marks
- light/shallow scars (from acne for example)
This is a pretty crazy list I know! But specialists and users of microdermabrasion who do it at home are seeing fast and lasting results.
How does a microdermabrasion machine work?
The microdermabrasion machine essentially injects mini crystals into the skin. And with the suction provided by the machine, the crystals break down the first layer of dead skin revealing the newer layer underneath also promoting cell turnover.
More specifically, the epidermis of the skin is made up of two layers: the Stratum Corneum and the underneath (new) layer. The crystals (or diamonds) work to get rid of the Stratum Corneum which is responsible for preventing vitamins entering the skin and stops hydration. The crystals fight against this layer and work to bring that new young layer to the surface and let those vitamins penetrate the all-important dermis.
It’s so crucial to get shed off the Stratum Corneum as it might be responsible for clogging up those pores causing acne, making your skin super thirsty and not letting those antioxidants get in when you drench your skin in anti-aging lotions and potions. The dermis has to be clear in order to absorb all the goodness from creams. As you can see from the diagram below, the dermis is where collagen and elastin are found. If the epidermis is blocked and the vitamins are not getting through to the dermis then collagen and elastin worsen over time causing multiple signs of aging. But microdermabrasion makes sure much more of the skin care product soaks into the skin.
Put simply, if your skin creams are not doing what they said they would do, shedding away that top dead layer of skin will make all the difference. Even if you feel that your creams are working well, they will work 100x better if you do microdermabrasion on your precious skin.

Be aware of these 5 things when deciding which machine to get:
1. Strength of Suction
So the first thing you should look for is the power or strength of the suction, you really want your machine to get rid of ALL the dead skin cells. It’s not like exfoliating in the shower, the machine should totally swipe your skin clean starting a clean new youthful slate.
Make sure the machine has a good suction but of course not too strong as you don’t want to feel any soreness what so ever- microdermabrasion at home should and must be absolutely pain-free. Different levels of suction is a nice tool to have as you can control the machine- especially handy for sensitive skin.
Also, the suction must be powerful because it stimulates blood flow increasing the production of collagen and elastin.
2. The Kit (Microdermabrasion tools)
Make sure your microdermabrasion home kit comes with lots of useful tools so you can get the most out of your machine. For example, there are accessories that help the skin absorb creams and serums even better or invest in a machine with a screen (advised especially if you’re new to microdermabrasion and if you’re advanced because it makes it so easy) as it talks you through the process step by step.
You could opt for a cheap machine, but you will not get the real benefits of microdermabrasion and some machines, even go beyond microdermabrasion. Check out reviewed microdermabrasion kits here with testimonials.
3. Clinical Studies on Microdermabrasion At Home
If the machine has science-backed evidence then the product is surely powerful and will work. Click here to read about science-certified products.
4. Real Testimonials and Reviews
I trust PEOPLE at the end of the day. I trust real stories, real life and real progress. So if there are lots of positive reviews and testimonials – go for it. If there aren’t good reviews but it’s cheaper, than it goes without saying the product will not give the results you’re looking for.
The main factor about microdermabrasion and the biggest reason why I’m talking about it is that it gives salon-quality results at very low price compared to heaps of salon treatments over many years. When it comes to deciding on a machine, the most expensive turns out to the be least expensive because; A) it will last longer so you don’t have to replace it. B) you will get the results you want (saving money and disappointment). C) never will you have to book an expensive chemical peel or facelift ever or ever again.
So perhaps spending more initially might freak you out a bit, but in the long run, you get much more bang for your buck.
