My Sunscreen Life Lessons
Ladies… I don’t know about you guys but before I got really into taking care of my skin, when I went on holiday I never looked after it. I thought putting on sunscreen would mean I wouldn’t get tanned…WRONG. I’m a self-confessed tanaholic and I’ve got the fine lines to prove it!
After just a few days of my shiny white skin on the beach, it became reddy brown but also super FLAKY AND CRISPY. Yes, how did I think my skin would let me get away with that?
Anyway, now I’m older and wiser, the wrinkles where I used to get burnt (my face and chest mainly) are much deeper than anywhere else on my body. My legs are wrinkle-free and that is down to less sun exposure. Did you know that the sun is the leading cause of premature aging? Now I take the necessary steps to protect my skin from those harmful yet glorious rays of sunshine.
Come summer or winter, I go out there door prepared for what the sun might hurl at me. Yes, even the winter. Wonder why skiers are so bronzed and sun-kissed… the sun still shines (therefore burns) in subzero degrees.
I’ve noticed how expensive sunscreen can be, though, so I found the best natural sunscreen recipe, which is now my favorite thing to slather on me in the sun, which I’m going to share with you. It’s super cheap to make and you will have ingredients to make a gezillion batches of sunscreen for all seasons.
There are also tons of extra preservatives in store-bought sunscreen that we don’t really need. This recipe provides a more natural sunblock so you can stroll or lay in the sun worry-free but also be totally sunkissed with a healthy glow.
The Ultimate Natural Sunscreen Recipe
-1/4 cup of organic Shea Butter- My absolute favorite is this one from Viva
-1/8 cup of Beeswax granules- I’ve tried these before
-2 tablespoons of Zinc Oxide powder- For the best deal, I always pick this one
-And the staple we can’t live without…1/4 of organic coconut oil- My favorite is Nature’s Way
-A double boiling pot or a pot and a glass bowl that will sit on top of each other – the bottom one with a little boiling water.
How to make the sunscreen:
1. Boil a bit of water in the bottom part of the double boiler.
2. Once the water has boiled, mix together the coconut oil and the shea butter together in the top half of the double boiler or glass bowl.
3. Add the beeswax granules and stir well.
4. When all the ingredients have melted and are all consistent, remove the top boiler or glass bowl.
5. Then stir in the Zinc Oxide
6. Pour the mixture into the blender and blend till it’s lump-free. Consistency is key.
7. After that, simply pour the mixture into a jar to let it cool off and thicken in texture.
How to use it:
-Slather on that natural sexy sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out in the sun.
-Reapply it every 2 hours you’re in the sun
-Don’t forget to reapply if you swim/shower.
– Even on a cloudy day, if it’s hot, you can still get burnt!
So there you have it! Your natural homemade sunscreen with no added chemicals, helping you achieve a more natural life.
Happy Sunbathing Ladies!
